What issues can breast surgery correct?

Although it can be said that true beauty comes from within, having to deal with a self-conscious concern about our physical appearance can have detrimental effects on our overall well being. Many women are unhappy with their breasts for a variety of reasons, notably ranging from being unhappy with the shape, size or symmetry. Fortunately, breast surgeries such as breast augmentation, breast reduction or breast lift, can help address many of these issues that may be causing concern.

Below I've looked at five common issues that women approach me with that can usually be corrected by undergoing breast surgery. Not only can these procedures help improve the appearance of the breasts for these women, but it can also do wonders for their self-confidence - which in itself can greatly benefit many different aspects of their life.

Increasing the size of a flat chest

While many women are able to embrace their breast size no matter what, many others with breasts that don't develop beyond some of the smaller cup sizes are often hugely self-conscious. In most cases, women who are flat-chested or who have developed breasts that are on the very small side tend to want nothing other than some added volume to help them feel more feminine and confident in their own body. Most aren't looking to become voluptuous by making dramatic changes with a huge increase in breast size, so going from flat-chested to a size that's noticeably larger but still very natural and within proportion to the rest of the body is something that can be easily achieved with breast augmentation.

Decreasing the size of large breasts

On the other side of the coin there are women with breasts that they consider to be too large for their liking. Some naturally develop breasts that are much larger than average, which can cause pain and discomfort to the back while also impacting other aspects of a woman's life such as limiting the range of clothes she can wear and having to avoid certain exercises or activities. Other women have undergone a breast augmentation previously but eventually decide that they'd like to decrease the size with another procedure. For any of these cases, a breast reduction procedure can help decrease the size of the breasts to a more manageable size that's in proportion with the rest of the body.

Improving breast asymmetry

No two breasts are ever exactly alike, but some women experience a significant difference between each breast. This usually means that one breast is noticeably larger than the other, or there may be a significant difference in the shape of each breast which can negatively effect self-confidence. The reason for breasts being asymmetrical could be down to genetics or a difference in growth rate between each breast. Breast surgery can help create a balance by increasing or decreasing the required volume of each breast to create a symmetrical appearance which then also makes it easier to shop for bras, swimwear and fitted clothing - not to mention the increased confidence it will bring.

Reduced volume after pregnancy or weight loss

When it comes to pregnancy, many women enjoy (or loathe) the perks of increased breast size that is often experienced. However, after giving birth the breasts usually return to their previous size or for some, smaller than they used to be. A post-pregnancy breast augmentation can help address these changes to the body that you're not happy about. Likewise, losing weight can also result in a significant reduction in breast size as the weight loss will take place across the entire body rather than just the areas you were hoping to target. Breast surgery can help increase the volume to a desirable size and remove any excess sagging skin, all while creating a more shapely silhouette that compliments your new body - sort of like the final touch to top-off a body you're proud of following the extremely hard work you put in to lose the excess weight. To achieve this a cosmetic surgeon may combine surgeries, such as a combining breast augmentation with a breast lift.

Addressing congenital abnormalities

Combining breast procedures as mentioned above can also greatly benefit those women who are born with congenital abnormalities. These may be issues that women are born with that affect the shape and size of the breasts, such as tubular breasts, which are more narrow in shape and usually hang very low from the chest wall. Breast surgery will allow an increase in breast volume and elevation which can result in a far more natural shape and projection from the body.
