Cosmetic surgery for men: what are the biggest trends?

As one of London's top plastic surgeons, I perform hundreds of cosmetic procedures every year, and the one trend I've noticed the most over the last few years is an increasing number of men seeking plastic surgery. Male plastic surgery is a topic I've discussed in great detail over the last few months, and new figures from the British Association of Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) have revealed just how much male plastic surgery has skyrocketed over the last decade.

According to BAAPS, there were 51,140 cosmetic surgery procedures performed in the UK in 2015, a 13% increase on the previous year, but interestingly, out of that number, 4,164 were performed on men, which is almost double the number of men having cosmetic surgery a decade ago! In total, 9% of all plastic surgery procedures performed in the UK last year were on men, which shows that men are increasingly seeking out cosmetic surgery.

Why are more men having plastic surgery?

In today’s fast-paced world, men, much like women, are being increasingly sexualised in mainstream media, causing many men to feel inadequate with their body or appearance. There is unnecessary pressure on men and women to look younger and more like the celebrities we see on our TVs every day. This is not a reason to have plastic surgery, as everyone is beautiful just the way they are, and I frequently comment that plastic surgery should enhance your natural beauty, and not change your appearance. Unfortunately, I do understand that because of how plastic surgery has evolved, the technology is there to allow people to have these complete celebrity makeovers.

I also believe that male plastic surgery is on the rise because cosmetic surgery is no longer the taboo topic it once was. Celebrities are now more open about having cosmetic surgery than ever before, which, in turn, is giving men and women the confidence to undergo a cosmetic procedure and not feel guilty afterwards.

What do men want from plastic surgery?

Men and women both want the same thing from plastic surgery, and that is to feel more confident in themselves and look better, but while these might be the main goals, the procedures men want differ from women.

Male patients are commonly after procedures that help them to look buff, which I believe is because of how men are presented in the media. I commonly see men looking to reduce the size of their breasts with a gynaecomastia procedure, or remove excess fat from around their waist with liposuction.

It has also been noted by other leading plastic surgeons that men are after quick cosmetic procedures such as Botox. Non-surgical procedures such as Botox are quick to administer and last for anywhere between 3-6 months, making them ideal for men who want to remove the signs of ageing from their face, but don’t want to undergo a full facelift or other facial procedures. This trend towards non-surgical plastic surgery procedures also shows that men are after procedures that help them look natural, although my Signature range of cosmetic procedures such as the T-B-T Facelift are more invasive but still produce natural-looking results.

If you are considering a plastic surgery procedure, it’s vital to do your research beforehand. You should only have a procedure for yourself and never for anybody else. Here at Harley Street Aesthetics, I always arrange an initial consultation to ensure you are fully aware of what to expect from the procedure.
