5 popular cosmetic surgery procedures for the over 50s

The most popular cosmetic surgery options when it comes to patients who are over the age of 50 tend to be procedures that focus on eradicating wrinkles and helping to lift and tighten loose skin. As we age, we can expect sagging skin in areas of the face and body to naturally become more noticeable. Prime examples would be sagging skin around the eyelids and jawline, or across the abdomen area.

Below, I’ve highlighted some cosmetic surgery options that I would recommend for those over 50.

Eyelid surgery

Unfortunately, nobody can escape the effects of ageing, and many would much rather find a way to reverse the physical signs. Eyelid surgery, such as my TBT-Eyelift procedure, can help with many cosmetic concerns that we experience around our eyes - notably wrinkles, a puffy appearance and drooping skin. The skin that forms the upper eyelid will begin to naturally droop as part of the ageing process, and in severe cases the loss of skin elasticity can be so extreme it effects their line of sight. Your genetics along with your lifestyle habits will dictate just how much elasticity your skin will lose over the years, so it’s important to eat healthily, drink plenty of water, refrain from smoking and avoid direct sunlight to keep your skin in the best condition for as long as possible. However, if the ageing process has taken its toll a little too much for your liking, eyelid surgery may be the perfect procedure to rejuvenate the appearance of your eyes with fantastic results.

Facelift

A facelift is another highly popular cosmetic surgery procedure among people over 50. It’s a fantastic solution for men and women who want to combat fine lines, wrinkles and sagging skin around the face and jawline in one procedure. Some people experience signs of ageing far earlier than others, so it’s not uncommon to see people in their 40s also opting for a facelift, while others decide to wait as late as their 60s when sagging skin and wrinkles become even more noticeable. My signature TBT-Facelift procedure aims to turn back time in the most natural way possible, so that the result is virtually unnoticeable.

Tummy tuck

The tummy is often a problem area for both men and women as it’s prone to storing fat and can prove difficult to tone - especially as we age. For women, it can be extra troublesome as abdominal skin and the surrounding muscles stretch during pregnancy, and when coupled with weight gain or loss it can result in stretched skin across the stomach as well as weakened or separated stomach muscles. A tummy tuck procedure will address excess fat and skin that surrounds your abdomen, leaving your stomach tightened and restored. A combination of methods and procedures are often used to produce the best results, such as skin tightening, muscle tightening and liposuction.

Breast augmentation or breast reduction with lift

For women who are unhappy with the size, shape or weight of their breasts, then breast enhancement surgery is the answer. The natural things that women over 50 have experienced through life can affect the size and position of a woman’s breast, such as child rearing, weight fluctuations and gravity. Depending on your circumstance you may opt to either enlarge your breasts with a breast augmentation or reduce them with a breast reduction. In either case, you may find it beneficial to include a breast lift. I recommend this because adding breast implants or removing fat and tissue will not improve any sagging or placement issues you have with the breasts. This is where the breast lift procedure is beneficial, as it is the perfect way to restore the appearance of your breasts.

Non-surgical procedures

The rise in popularity of non-surgical procedures such as Botox and dermal fillers has been staggering in recent years. These are quick and effective procedures that can produce fantastic results when it comes to removing fine lines and wrinkles, contouring areas of the face or adding volume to thin lips. A cosmetic surgeon or practitioner with the correct expertise and experience will be able to combine these procedures to produce subtle enhancements that can make you look fresh and youthful on the outside, and full on confidence on the inside - and all without the extensive planning and recovery required with surgical cosmetic procedures.
