Marionette lines and Tummy Tuck - my first Alan Titchmarsh Show

28 February 2013

By Plastic Surgeon Dr Dirk Kremer

My first beauty anti-ageing slot on The Alan Titchmarsh Show was slightly different from the others. First of all, the lovely beauty journalist Anna Richardson was my partner in crime, instead of charming Nadine Baggott. Secondly, this was my first real TV appearance (you may have seen me on Channel 4's Embarrassing Bodies back in 2011 but the context was quite different) so I was a bit tensed up, but the brilliant team made me feel comfortable.

Why plastic surgery on the Alan Titchmarsh show?

The idea behind the plastic surgery slot on the Alan Titchmarsh Show is that cosmetic surgery is a fast growing “industry” in spite of the tough economic times, and the show’s producers think it’s important to give viewers insight into some options available to them - to ultimately unravel the mystery that surrounds the cosmetic surgery industry.

Cosmetic plastic surgery can mean going under the knife (faceliftbreast augmentation, breast reduction, abdominoplasty, brachioplasty…) but it can also be less invasive, with injections of dermal fillers , botulinium toxin, chemical peels , lasers, etc.

I think it is important to know and understand the different solutions there are for every beauty/ageing issue, and the Alan Titchmarsh Show is a great opportunity to help inform women (and men!).

Here are the main points treated during the first show:

Marionette lines

Marionette lines are the lines at the corner of our mouths that give the impression that we are miserable. Both men and women face this problem at a certain age, it’s very common when we get older (40’s-70’s).

The answer: dermal filler

The easiest way to get rid of the marionette lines is by injecting a dermal filler to pump the indentation up. It is very easy and quick. I use an aesthetic cream to numb the area and then inject the filler, for an immediate effect.

Cost: from £350, depending on how much dermal filler is needed. Price here is for about 1ml of filler.

Duration of the effect: 6-8 months; results would be noticeable for up to 12 months

Abdominoplasty, aka Tummy Tuck

Abdominoplasty is the best answer if you wish your “mommy tummy” away, when exercise is not enough to make it disappear. When you lose a lot of weight, surgery is an efficient solution to get rid of the extra skin you’re left with.  Sometimes the abdominal muscle that opens during pregnancy to allow the baby to grow doesn’t knit back together after delivery (abdominal divarication) leaving the mother looking pregnant after the birth.  No amount of exercise will help resolve this - the only solution is to surgically stitch the muscle back together.

The tummy tuck surgery lasts around 2 ½ - 3 hours, under general anaesthesia.   Women need to consider this surgery carefully as the scar is quite long – from hipbone to hipbone, however I do try to keep it in the bikini line area so it is hidden even in the smallest of knickers!

You do need to be as close to your normal BMI as possible and should follow a healthy diet and exercise programme post operatively to maintain the result.

You can read my abdominoplasty page for more information.

Cost: from £8,200.00
